MP calls for stronger action on cancer as Ghana marks World Cancer Day

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Hon. Ewurabena Aubyhn, has called for renewed and sustained action to address Ghana’s growing cancer burden as the country joins the world to mark World Cancer Day 2026.

In a statement to commemorate the day, the MP described cancer as an escalating public health concern, citing data that shows more than 24,000 new cancer cases are recorded annually in Ghana. She urged government and stakeholders to prioritise prevention, early detection, and access to treatment as part of a coordinated national response.

“Cancer is no longer a distant or rare disease in Ghana. It is a growing public health challenge that cuts across age, gender, income level, and geography,” she stated.

Hon. Aubyhn commended the MahamaCares initiative, which is aimed at supporting cancer patients, and called for its strengthening and expansion to reach more vulnerable people across the country.

She also stressed the need to decentralise cancer care services, improve access to screening nationwide, and make treatment more affordable to reduce late detection and prevent avoidable deaths.

According to her, tackling cancer effectively will require sustained investment, public education, and equitable access to healthcare services, especially in underserved communities.
