Voters in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region head to the polls today, Tuesday, September 2, 2025, to elect a new Member of Parliament following the passing of Ernest Kumi, the sitting MP.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to participate in the hotly contested by-election, which has shaped up into a major political showdown between the two dominant parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC is fielding Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP has presented Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both candidates have mounted vigorous campaigns, backed by high-profile visits from party leaders and national executives in recent weeks.
To ensure order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across the constituency. The Command has cautioned against violence, voter intimidation, or any breach of electoral rules, stressing that security agencies are ready to act decisively against offenders.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has also assured stakeholders of a transparent and credible process, noting that special arrangements have been made for the smooth delivery of election materials, effective monitoring, and swift collation of results.
With national attention fixed on Akwatia, analysts say today’s outcome could serve as a litmus test of voter sentiment between the NDC and NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
