NPP settles on Baba Ali Yussif for Ayawaso East by-election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed and acclaimed Baba Ali Yussif as its parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The decision followed what the party described as extensive consultations by its National Executive Committee (NEC) with key stakeholders to arrive at a consensus candidate capable of winning the seat. As part of the process, the NEC set up a Candidate Search Committee chaired by former NPP General Secretary, John Boadu.

After wide-ranging engagements within the Ayawaso East Constituency and the Greater Accra Region, the committee unanimously recommended Baba Ali Yussif, who currently serves as the NPP’s Constituency Secretary, as the most suitable candidate.

Based on the committee’s report, the party on Sunday, February 8, 2026, convened an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting and a Delegates Conference in Ayawaso East.

At the meeting, delegates unanimously acclaimed Baba Ali Yussif as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the by-election.

In a statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP called on its members, supporters, and sympathisers to rally fully behind Baba Ali Yussif, describing him as the party’s best chance of securing victory in the contest.

The party also appealed to residents of Ayawaso East to vote massively for its candidate, expressing confidence that his leadership would help restore “hope, effective representation and prosperity” to the constituency.
