The government’s fight against illegal mining has recorded a breakthrough as the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) mounted a three-day operation that sent over 1,000 galamsey operators fleeing and destroyed hundreds of pieces of equipment and makeshift structures.
The operation, carried out in Nzema East and Tarkwa Nsuem municipalities, began last Thursday and ended last Saturday, saw 319 makeshift structures torched, 103 chanfang machines destroyed, 17 pumping machines seized, and three dredging machines dismantled, with the campaign set to continue across all illegal mining hotspots.
“This is a clear demonstration that the era of treating galamsey as an unstoppable menace is over. NAIMOS has demonstrated that with political will, strategic coordination, and sustained operations, Ghana’s environmental heritage can be reclaimed from the grip of illegal mining.”
The raids, which targeted communities directly polluting the Ankobra, Bonsa, Pra, and Birim rivers, prevented further destruction of Ghana’s water bodies.
NAIMOS operatives disabled excavators and dismantled pipelines that had been diverting entire rivers for illegal mining.
