Over 50 shops razed in fire outbreak at Kwame Nkrumah Circle

A major fire outbreak has destroyed more than 50 shops located behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, causing significant losses to traders on Tuesday morning, January 20, 2026.

The blaze reportedly broke out at about 10:00 a.m. and quickly swept through a cluster of mobile phone shops before personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived to contain the situation. Firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control after intense efforts to prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially established, some affected shop owners at the scene suspect an electrical fault may have triggered the outbreak. Authorities have not confirmed whether there were injuries, while assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Klotey Korle Municipal Assembly were at the scene to assess losses and coordinate preliminary relief and safety measures.

Meanwhile, residents and motorists have been urged to exercise caution and avoid the area as investigations continue and recovery efforts are underway.
