Parliament set for showdown over dismissal of workers hired after 2024 polls

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed the Majority Leader to formally schedule a motion seeking a full parliamentary investigation into the termination of public sector workers employed after the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The directive, issued on Tuesday, followed a strong protest from the Minority Parliamentary Caucus, which vowed to deploy all available parliamentary mechanisms to challenge what it describes as an unlawful government action.

The controversy arises from a February 11, 2025, directive issued by the Chief of Staff, ordering the revocation of appointments made within the public sector after the elections. The Minority argues that the move violates due process and unfairly targets workers who were legally employed.

Speaker Bagbin’s instruction to list the motion is expected to trigger a formal parliamentary inquiry into the matter. However, efforts to table the motion have met resistance from the Majority Caucus, which has raised a procedural objection.

The Majority contends that the issue is currently before the courts and therefore falls under the parliamentary sub judice rule, which bars debate on matters under judicial consideration to prevent prejudice or interference with ongoing legal proceedings.
