Parliamentary Press Corps holds capacity-building workshop to strengthen economic reporting

The Parliamentary Press Corps has received a major boost with a two-day capacity-building workshop designed to deepen journalists’ understanding of economic and policy-related issues.

The training programme, organised with support from the World Bank and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), is being held at the Capital View Hotel.

The workshop seeks to equip journalists who report on parliamentary affairs with the skills and knowledge required to interpret complex legislative debates and economic policy discussions.

Dean of the Parliamentary Press Corps, Simon Agianab, expressed appreciation to the organisers for investing in the professional development of journalists covering Parliament of Ghana.

According to him, strengthening the capacity of parliamentary reporters is essential for ensuring accurate and responsible reporting on national economic policies and governance issues.

“Your investment in building the capacity of the media ultimately strengthens transparency, accountability and democratic governance in Ghana,” Agianab said.

Participants in the workshop are being taken through key topics including public debt management, the interpretation of national budget statements and the analysis of reports produced by the Ghana Audit Service, headed by the Auditor-General.

The training is expected to enhance journalists’ ability to simplify complex economic data and legislative proceedings for the public, thereby improving citizens’ understanding of key policy decisions made in Parliament.

Media practitioners attending the programme say the workshop will help them strengthen their reporting on financial governance and ensure that parliamentary debates are communicated more clearly and accurately to the public.
