An immigration officer stationed in Bolgatanga has been taken into police custody in connection with 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition intercepted on a bus bound for northern Ghana last week.

The police revealed that the officer, whose name is withheld, is assigned to the Bolgatanga Regional Provost of the Ghana Immigration Service. Preliminary investigations established that a body armour plate, a bulletproof helmet, and a black long boot found on the bus belonged to him.
Two individuals, a bus driver and his assistant, were initially arrested during the interception at the Asankare police barrier in the Ashanti Region on December 26, 2025.
The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram and Godfred Essel, were transporting the ammunition from Accra to Walewale, with Paga as the final destination, aboard a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number GT 5771-18.
Police said a search of the bus uncovered two concealed containers holding the ammunition, as well as two bulletproof plates, a black helmet, and a pair of long boots hidden under the driver’s seat. Afram and Essel remain in police custody, assisting with investigations, while the bus and recovered items have been impounded.
On the involvement of the immigration officer, the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP John Dzineku Ferguson, said that, acting on information linking the officer to the body armour, long boots, and helmet, the police requested his release from the Ghana Immigration Service. The officer was handed over to the police on January 2, 2026, at about 12:20 p.m.
During questioning, the officer reportedly told police that before his transfer to the Upper East Region, he served as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Office. He said he was transferred to Paga in June 2025 and had left his body armour plate and an old black boot behind.
According to preliminary police reports, on December 26, 2025, the officer asked a colleague at the Accra headquarters, identified as Isaac, to send the body armour to him in Paga. Isaac allegedly agreed and packed the body armour plate, long boots, ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser, and a disco bulb, which were handed to the bus driver, Charles Brown, for transport.
On December 27, 2025, the immigration officer in Paga reportedly contacted one Siso in Walewale to take delivery of the parcel, only to learn that Siso had been arrested by the police.
The officer is currently in detention as investigations continue.
