Police seize 152 bales of suspected narcotics, three arrested after GH¢69,000 bribe attempt

The Western Regional Police Command has intercepted two trucks loaded with 152 bales of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances and arrested three persons in connection with the seizure.

The suspects have been identified as Moses Kwaku Tawiah, 44; Kwame Kontor, 44; and Kwabena Forson, 55.

According to police, the first interception occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at about 5:20 p.m. at the Assorkor barrier near Shama. Officers on duty stopped a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GE 8965-12, which was loaded with bales believed to contain narcotic drugs. Upon sighting the police, the occupants of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene.

Moses Kwaku Tawiah later appeared at the barrier claiming ownership of the impounded truck, stating it belonged to his brother and pleading for its release. However, during interrogation, he allegedly admitted that he was in charge of a separate Hyundai Gold truck, registration number GS 3368-17, which was also loaded with similar goods and parked at Nkroful, near the Block Factory area in Sekondi.

Police proceeded to the location and found the second truck parked as indicated. Further inspection reportedly revealed that each bale contained approximately 80 slabs of compressed dried leaves suspected to be narcotics.

In a dramatic turn of events, police said that at about 2:00 a.m. on February 23, 2026, two individuals, later identified as Kwame Kontor and Kwabena Forson, arrived at the same barrier with GH¢69,000.00 in cash in an alleged attempt to bribe officers to release the trucks.

The officers immediately arrested the two men and retained the money as evidence.

The two trucks have since been impounded, and all three suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

The Western Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the region.

Investigations are ongoing.
