Police service, climate ministry to partner on sports, climate action initiative

The Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of State for Climate Change and Sustainability have agreed to collaborate on a joint initiative aimed at using sports as a strategic tool to advance climate action and sustainability within the Police Service.

The agreement followed a meeting convened by the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Hon. Seidu Issifu, who invited the Director of Sports of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Bernice Timbilla, to discuss potential areas of partnership.

Although the initial concept was introduced by the Ministry, discussions at the meeting led to the joint adoption of an expanded Sports–Climate Action framework proposed by ASP Timbilla. The framework integrates sports development with climate awareness and sustainable practices across the Ghana Police Service and was mutually endorsed by both institutions as a practical and impactful approach.

Under the agreed framework, police sports platforms will be leveraged to promote environmental responsibility, climate education, and sustainability. Key focus areas include green sports infrastructure, climate-smart management of sports events, and community and youth engagement programmes driven through police sports disciplines.

Both institutions underscored the importance of collaboration and co-creation, noting that the initiative reflects the Ministry’s policy leadership on climate change and sustainability, alongside the Ghana Police Service’s operational strength in sports development and community outreach.

Hon. Seidu Issifu welcomed the outcome of the engagement and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the Ghana Police Service to align the initiative with national climate and sustainability priorities.

ASP Bernice Timbilla, on her part, expressed appreciation to the Minister for initiating the engagement and reiterated the Police Service’s readiness to jointly implement the Sports–Climate Action agenda.

Further technical engagements are expected in the coming weeks to formalise the partnership and outline clear implementation pathways.
