Tamale Central By-Election: Security Analyst Adib Saani declines calls to contest

Security Analyst Adib Saani has officially declined calls from some youth groups in the Tamale Central constituency, urging him to contest in the upcoming parliamentary by-election.

The by-election follows the death of Tamale Central MP and Environment Minister, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash earlier this month. His passing has left a significant political vacuum in the constituency and within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In recent days, youth groups had rallied behind Mr. Saani, describing him as a credible candidate with expertise in peace and security and a strong record of national advocacy. They argued that he was well-placed to continue Dr. Murtala’s legacy.

However, in a Facebook post, Mr. Saani announced that he would not be joining the race, citing his current professional commitments.

“After careful reflection, I must announce that I will not be contesting at this time. My current professional commitments demand my undivided attention. I believe stepping into Parliament requires one’s full focus, and I will only do so when I can serve you with the excellence and dedication you truly deserve,” he stated.

Despite turning down the calls, Mr. Saani reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Tamale Central, pledging support for initiatives that empower the youth, strengthen security, and promote community progress. He added that he may make himself available for elected office at a future date.

Meanwhile, the NDC’s nomination process has attracted strong interest from aspirants such as Professor Alidu Seidu, former Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana; Hanan Gundaa-do, former Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive; Halid Abdul-Rauf, a former Northern Regional Treasurer of the NDC; and Seidu Fitter, a Principal Research Assistant at the University for Development Studies (UDS).

The two women in the race are Hajia Shamima Yakubu, current Northern Regional Treasurer of the NDC, and Hajia Alimatu Issahaku.

Meanwhile, two of the aspirants have withdrawn from the contest, dropping the number of candidates to 12.

The party is expected to complete vetting and balloting of candidates by the end of August, ahead of the by-election scheduled for September 30, 2025.
