Tontokrom youngsters brawl with accused Machomen over mining concession; three killed.

On Saturday afternoon, the muscularly built guys reportedly shot and killed a local for trespassing on a mine site.

This incensed the youngsters, who launched a retaliatory attack, lynching two of the murders.

“We saw two branded Asanko Mines vehicles and four non-branded ones occupied by machomen in the community. Some of the youth went closer to the vehicles to hoot at the occupants and before we realized the machomen had started firing gunshots. One person was hit by a stray bullet and died on the spot.

We were left with no choice than to also attack them. The vehicles sped off but two machomen fell on the ground. They were lynched”, an eyewitness, Emmanuel Appiah narrated

The community had previously held a rally to seek the creation of community mining in Tontokrom to offer work for jobless youngsters.

They accused Asanko Mines of wanting to take over their mining concession.

However, the firm denied the accusations, claiming that the government had not given community mining licence because the land sought by the villagers is within Asanko Mines’ operations area.
