The Frimpong-Manso Institute (FMI) has called on political parties, security agencies, and voters to demonstrate the highest respect for democratic values, peace, and security during the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

In a statement, the Institute expressed concern that by-elections in Ghana in recent years have gained notoriety for brutal, violent acts and naked security breaches, warning that such incidents have contributed to the downward trajectory of Ghana’s democracy.
“It is heart-rending to note that by-elections in modern memory have gained notoriety for brutal, violent acts and naked security breaches. All this accounts for the downward trajectory of Ghana’s democracy.”
According to the Institute, the Akwatia by-election presents an opportunity for the country to break from that past.
“Akwatia’s by-election, therefore, presents a hugely critical opportunity for our dear nation to change this ugly script and open a real chapter of democratic renewal,” it noted.
The statement further observed that security arrangements for the by-election appear stronger than in previous polls. However, FMI stressed that the real test lies in how effectively law enforcement agencies will prevent or respond to any threats that may arise.
FMI also pointed out the intense interest of the ruling NDC and opposition NPP in securing victory in the contest, urging both parties to put the nation’s stability above partisan gains.
“It is our hope and prayer that democracy and peace will be the ultimate winner in the impending blockbuster contest,” the Institute said.
