“We must engineer our way into prosperity”: Dr Adutwum pushes for STEM, TVET for Africa’s future

Former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosumtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has called on African countries to prioritize Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to drive the continent’s transformation.

Speaking as a patron at the 5th African Curriculum Association (ACA) Conference in Abuja, he emphasized that STEM and TVET are essential to equipping Africa’s young population with the skills needed to compete globally and accelerate industrial growth.

He argued that African curricula must shift from rote learning to skill acquisition, creativity, and resilience.

“We cannot memorize our way out of poverty; we must engineer our way into prosperity,” he said.

The former minister stressed that Africa’s progress depends not only on technical knowledge but also on mindset and leadership.

“The best days of our continent lie ahead, and together, we will build a future that inspires generations,” he added.

The conference brought together education stakeholders to discuss strategies for aligning curricula with the demands of the 21st century, with a strong focus on innovation, job creation, and sustainable growth.
