The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over the perceived obstruction of a parliamentary probe into the government’s expenditure of COVID-19 funds. Dr. Ayew Afriyie, the chairman of the Health Committee, has been accused of deliberately impeding the investigation, according to the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Parliament’s Speaker, Alban Bagbin, tasked the Finance and Health Committees with scrutinizing the utilization of COVID-19 funds following reported irregularities highlighted by the Finance Minister in June 2022.
However, the Minority alleges that Dr. Ayew Afriyie has failed to convene meetings to address the matter, despite the urgency of the situation. Dr. Forson expressed frustration over the delay, emphasizing that the absence of meetings has stalled progress on the probe for nearly eight months.
The Minority Leader highlighted the formation of a sub-committee and the submission of guidelines to expedite the investigation, which have seemingly been disregarded. The accusation of sabotage raises concerns about transparency and accountability regarding COVID-19 expenditure, as Parliament strives to ensure proper oversight of public funds amidst the ongoing pandemic.
