Financial Challenges Is The Core Cause of Ghana’s Electricity Outages – Research and Policy Analyst-IES Reveals

Research and Policy Analyst with IES, Xatse Derick Emmanuel, has brought attention to the ongoing electricity outages in Ghana, contradicting the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited’s claims of technical challenges. Asserting that the core issue lies in financial constraints rather than technical inadequacies.

He revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) struggled to meet its financial obligations to Category A and B players in the industry.

“Despite the monthly target payments set at 514 million cedis for Category A players (IPGs), ECG only disbursed 120 million cedis. Similarly, for Category B players, where a payment of 307 million cedis was expected, ECG only managed 168 million cedis.”

Additionally, both the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO) and the Volta River Authority (VRA) did not receive any payments in January, as highlighted in the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) January report.

“He urge ECG to be transparent and address these financial issues directly and to clarify the discrepancies outlined in the PURC report, stressing that Ghanaians deserve transparency and accountability regarding the country’s energy crisis.”

He further advocated for the implementation of a scheduled power outage timetable, commonly referred to as “Dumsor,” to mitigate the impact on citizens and businesses alike.
