The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled plans to provide head porters, commonly known as “kayayei,” with driving skills.
This announcement was made during the launch of the “Kayayei Empowerment Programme” held in Madina on Tuesday, May 21.
During his speech at the event, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his dedication to creating opportunities for marginalized groups. He stated, “In addition to the strides already made, I am thrilled to announce that discussions are ongoing with Metro Mass and Ayalolo to teach them (kayayei) driving.”
The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is spearheading this initiative, which includes the construction of a three-story facility equipped with ancillary facilities for the head porters. This facility will serve as both a residence and a training center for the Kayayei.
The Kayayei Empowerment Programme aims to train 5,000 young women between May and November 2024, accommodating 600 participants per month. The programme will provide practical skills and knowledge, preparing participants for specific trades and occupations.
The training sessions will last three weeks, during which participants will receive startup kits, stipends, and free accommodation.
