The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned a disturbing incident at the Northern Regional Hospital, formerly the Tamale Central Hospital, where a group of youth stormed the facility, locked up the Medical Director’s office and several administrative departments, and blocked access to the Out-Patient Department.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the chaotic scene, prompting strong criticism from the GMA, which warned that such lawless actions endanger both patients and health workers.

In a statement signed by its President, Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke, the Association described the incident as unacceptable and alarming.

“The GMA strongly condemns the lawless acts of the group which put the lives of patients and staff as well as the safety of property in danger,” the statement said.

The Association noted with concern the increasing trend of youth groups storming health facilities to lock offices and intimidate managers, saying it violates public service procedures for addressing grievances.

“This growing culture of youth groups storming health facilities to lock up offices and threaten facility managers in breach of the clear procedures of the public service in seeking redress puts the lives of both patients and health workers in danger.”

The Association has called on the Police to urgently arrest and prosecute the perpetrators. It also urged traditional leaders to intervene and help restore calm by guiding the youth to follow due process in addressing any concerns.

The GMA reminded the public that clear procedures exist for resolving disagreements over management or service delivery at health facilities, and violence is never an acceptable option.

It further appealed to the Ghana Health Service to ensure immediate protection for the Medical Director and staff while authorities work to address issues raised.

The Association added that it is closely monitoring developments and will take necessary actions in due course should the threat to doctors and other health workers persist.
