Ken Ofori-Atta and Kwaku Afriyie Set to Assume Special Envoy Roles

Valentine’s Day Reshuffle Unveils New Advisory Positions

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is poised to take on a pivotal role as Senior Presidential Adviser on the economy, coupled with the responsibility of spearheading international investments and capital markets initiatives, reliable sources at the Presidency have disclosed
In a parallel move, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, the erstwhile Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, is slated to be appointed as President Akufo-Addo’s special envoy on Climate, augmenting Ghana’s commitment to global climate action.

Ofori-Atta’s tenure as Minister of Finance, spanning seven years, has left an indelible mark, establishing him as the longest-serving Finance Minister in Ghana’s history since the republic’s inception.

Today marked the formal transition, with Mohammed Amin Adam assuming the mantle of Minister of Finance, inheriting ongoing negotiations on debt restructuring with private creditors and preparations for the second Economic and Financial Program (ECF) review by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
While this morning’s official statement from Jubilee House primarily focused on ministerial appointments, insiders hint at broader forthcoming changes, possibly as early as Monday, reflecting the most comprehensive reshuffle under President Akufo-Addo’s tenure, bridging his two terms.

The impending appointment of a Climate Change envoy aligns with global precedents, mirroring initiatives by key nations such as the United States, China, the United Kingdom, and France, alongside prominent international organizations like the World Bank, IMF, and the United Nations.

Additionally, discussions abound regarding a potential realignment within the majority front in Parliament, with an anticipated announcement following the New Patriotic Party’s National Executive Council meeting scheduled for Monday. Stay tuned for updates as the reshuffle unfolds.
