A 23-year-old man accused of murdering his 60-year-old father, Yaw Nbim, has been referred to the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast by the Enchi District Magistrate Court to determine his mental state.
Abednego Nbim, unemployed, allegedly committed the crime at Kuesuea, a cottage in old Yakase in the Aowin municipality.
Currently facing a provisional charge of murder as his plea has not been taken, Abednego’s case has been adjourned to Monday, May 20, 2024, by the trial judge, Mr. Lawrence Buanor-Buer.
The Prosecutor, Detective Chief Inspector Joseph Kwadwo Agyare, informed the court that the complainant, Akosua Andolo, a farmer and the suspect’s mother, lived together with the deceased (husband), suspect, and his other siblings at Kuesuea.
According to the prosecutor, the suspect’s parents had noticed his abnormal behavior for some time and took him to the Enchi Government Hospital’s Mental Health Unit for examination and treatment.
On April 1, 2024, the suspect was admitted to the facility, and a referral letter was issued to the parents to send him to the Wa Regional Hospital- Mental Health Unit for further care.
However, on April 5, 2024, the suspect was discharged, but instead of proceeding to Wa for medical attention, his parents took him home, claiming he was suffering from spiritual instinct.
Chief Inspector Agyare further explained that on April 13, 2024, the suspect attempted to assault his mother but ended up attacking his father when he intervened.
The suspect’s younger brother witnessed the altercation and reported it to the community committee chairman. Meanwhile, the complainant called for help from the nearby cottage.
The suspect was subsequently arrested by the police, but the complainant later reported that her husband was missing after the suspect allegedly chased him out of the cottage.
A search party organized by community leaders found the body of Yaw Nbim in a nearby bush about 90 meters away from their cottage on April 14, 2024.
