Minister of Information Expresses Concern Over Poor Salaries for Journalists

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has voiced serious concern over the inadequate salary and remuneration systems for journalists in the country. Nkrumah emphasized that the issue of poor salaries significantly contributed to the low press freedom index in 2023.

Speaking at the second Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) dinner night in Accra, Nkrumah urged media owners to prioritize fair compensation for journalists, highlighting that it plays a crucial role in enhancing confidence in the media sector.

“If you look at the world press freedom index that was released in the year 2023, the single item that dragged Ghana down the most, if you read the report in detail, is the welfare and the economic conditions of journalists in Ghana,” Nkrumah stated.

He further pointed out that many journalists in the industry face challenges such as not receiving salaries, missing statutory payments made on their behalf by employers, and inadequate pension deductions. Nkrumah urged those in the media industry to pay attention to these issues and work towards improving the economic conditions of journalists in Ghana.
