Naa Koryoo Released After Hours in Police Detention

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has been released after hours of detention at the Police CID Headquarters. Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station on Friday, June 7, following an invitation, which incited anger among NDC supporters who besieged the premises demanding her release.

NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, condemned the detention and warned that it could escalate political tensions. In a statement calling for Naa Koryoo’s release, the former president emphasized that justice is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the nation.

The National Communications Officer for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, criticized the Ghana Police Service’s leadership over the arrest, alleging it was orchestrated by personnel controlled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Naa Koryoo’s assistant, Delali Sewarkpor, described the detention as political persecution by elements within the NPP.

Jubilant NDC supporters were seen celebrating at the Cantonments Police Station around 12:10 pm on Saturday, marking Naa Koryoo’s release.
