Major Ministerial Reshuffle Expected on Valentine’s Day: President Akufo-Addo Set to Shake Up Cabinet

In a move anticipated to be the most significant since assuming office in 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is poised to announce a major ministerial reshuffle on Wednesday, February 14, 2024—Valentine’s Day. The shake-up, rumoured to affect up to 12 current ministers, including 10 cabinet members and 2 regional ministers, is expected to see some prominent figures either reassigned or dropped entirely from their positions.

According to sources within Jubilee House, several ministers and Members of Parliament made visits to the Fourth Floor, where the President’s office is located, indicating preparations for the impending changes. While some ministers may be completely dropped, others are likely to be reassigned to different portfolios.

The reshuffle is also anticipated to impact deputy ministers, with approximately seven expected to lose their positions. The beneficiaries are speculated to be backbenchers from the ruling party, who are poised to fill the vacated slots.
President Akufo-Addo, ahead of his official trip to Europe, has been engaged in meetings throughout the day with ministers and deputy ministers potentially affected by the reshuffle. Additionally, talks of a possible reshuffle within the majority front in Parliament are circulating, following discussions between the ruling New Patriotic Party’s leadership and the presidency.

As the President is set to depart for an official assignment in Germany tomorrow, the list of ministerial appointments will be submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Somana Bagbin, as per constitutional requirements, with the official announcement expected to be made on the floor of Parliament. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds.
