Majority Caucus in Parliament Denies Reports of Impending Leadership Changes

The Majority caucus in Parliament has vehemently dismissed reports suggesting imminent changes to its leadership, asserting that the status quo will persist.

Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bekwai, addressed concerns and speculations surrounding potential leadership shifts within the Majority Caucus. He emphasized the stability and unity among caucus members, stating, “The publications circulating are false; the majority caucus has neither made nor contemplated any changes to its leadership. We urge you to disregard such reports.”

“We have full confidence in our current leadership, and there are no plans to alter the status quo,” Osei Owusu added.

He also noted the caucus’s unawareness of any external attempts to influence its leadership, emphasizing that only caucus members hold the authority to make such changes.

Furthermore, Osei Owusu highlighted the importance of maintaining cohesion to effectively address legislative matters and pursue the government’s agenda.

The response comes in light of media reports suggesting that the current Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, may be succeeded by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader. While Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s ministerial role remains uncertain, he is expected to chair the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Committee.

In anticipation of these changes, Frank Annoh Dompreh, the incumbent Majority Chief Whip, is rumored to ascend to the position of Deputy Majority Leader. This would pave the way for Habib Iddrisu, the current First Deputy Chief Whip, to assume the role of Majority Chief Whip.

The anticipated reshuffle also includes the potential appointment of either Patricia Appiagyei or Freda Prempeh as the new First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, following Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s nomination as Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation by President Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Additionally, the position of Second Deputy Chief Whip is expected to be filled by Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Akontombra.
