SML Welcomes Audit Directive from President Akufo-Addo, Anticipates Transparent Outcome

Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd. (SML) has expressed its welcome for the directive issued by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, instructing the suspension of ongoing revenue assurance operations for an audit into its contract with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ministry of Finance. President Akufo-Addo appointed the audit firm KPMG to conduct an immediate review of the transaction.

In a statement, SML conveyed its anticipation that the audit’s results will provide a clear and accurate portrayal of its operations. The company expressed hope that the findings of the audit would be made public to ensure transparency and accountability.

SML stated, “We remain resolute in upholding the highest business standards and welcome the scrutiny that this audit would bring.”

The company also conveyed confidence that the audit’s conclusions would affirm the integrity of its collaboration with GRA and the Ministry of Finance.

The directive for the audit came in response to an investigative report released by the Fourth Estate in December 2023, which implicated SML, GRA, and the Ministry of Finance. The report raised concerns about a 10-year contract allegedly awarding SML $100 million annually, leading to calls for an investigation.

SML refuted the claims, asserting that it holds a 5-year contract, not 10, and does not receive $100 million annually. The Ghana Revenue Authority, in a statement, affirmed that proper processes were followed in procuring SML’s services.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson, characterized the President’s directive as coming “too late in the day” and accused it of being a whitewashing attempt.
