The office of the Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, vehemently defended his impartiality following a critical editorial piece by the Daily Guide Network. The editorial piece had accused the Speaker of partisanship in relation to the near boycott of the State of the Nation Address.

However, the Speaker’s office clarified that he played a crucial role in resolving the matter and preventing the boycott, with interventions from both the President and former President John Dramani Mahama.

The statment emphasized the Speaker’s commitment to fairness and impartiality, citing instances where he clashed with the Minority Caucus and overruled his Deputy in the interest of consensus. It also highlighted his efforts to achieve balance and inclusivity in the Parliamentary Service Board by nominating members from both the NPP and NDC. Despite criticism from some within his own party, the Speaker’s actions have been aimed at promoting unity and fairness within Parliament.

Furthermore, the Speaker has call on the Daily Guide Network to issue an unqualified apology to the Speaker, urging them to focus on substantive issues such as the Speaker’s leadership in passing significant legislation like the LGBTQI+ Bill and his initiatives to promote Ghanaian culture in Parliament. The Speaker’s office reiterated his commitment to upholding the integrity of Parliament and serving the best interests of the Ghanaian people.
